                              Coach Scott O'Neal

                              Scott started fencing at Purdue University in 1995 in a beginner class taught by his friend Dennis Djou. After completing his first class, Scott became an assistant instructor and avid fencer, eventually assuming the role of instructor when Dennis graduated and left the University. During his years at Purdue, Scott was an active competitor, taught fencing classes, served as President of the Purdue Fencing Club and was an active member of the Club Sports Council. In 2002, Scott moved to Richmond, VA in order to continue graduate school. There he became a member of the Richmond Fencing Club and an active member of the Virginia Division of the USFA. In addition to training and instructing at RFC, Scott serves on the VA Division Executive Committee and competes at tournaments both locally and nationally.

                              Scott placed first in epee in the 2009 VA Division Championships, second in the 2006 and 2008 VA Division Championships, and third in both the 2005 and 2007 VA Division Championships.  He was a VA Division Men's Epee Points Champion from 2003 to 2008 and a VA Division Men's Three-Weapon Points Champion in the 2007, 2008 season.  Scott also placed first in Men's Epee in the 2000 Big 10 Championship and finished in the Top 32 three times in Division I NAC events in the 2005, 2006 season.  He has previously reached 27th on the National Rolling Points List and 16th on the Team Points list.  Scott has earned an A09 in epee, a C08 in foil, an E08 in saber, and has earned referee ratings in foil (7), epee (7), and saber (8).


                              Coach Dee Hayes

                              Dee Hayes, a native of Cuba, started fencing at nine years old at Barbados Heroes, a national sports school in Havana, Cuba. She studied foil and epee under Coaches Ichi, Margarita Rodriguez, Jorge Valdez, Orlando Durruty, and Manuel Ortiz, all of them world renowned and recognized ranking icons.  After graduating from the University of Sports "Manuel Fajardo" in Havana, she taught at the National Academy in Havana.  During her 5 year tenure, Dee monitored 72 athletes between the ages of 7 and 21 and promoted an innumerable amount of students to higher techniques schools and the Cuban National Team of Fencing.

                              Dee placed first in epee in the 2011 VA Division Championships and first in foil and third in epee in the 2009 VA Division Championships.  She was also a silver medallist in the Women's Epee Team event in the 2009 VA Division Championships.  In Cuba, Dee was the captain of the Women's Team of Havana, three-time winner of the Cuban National Tournament (age divisions 13-14 and 15-16), and champion of both the Tournament Games of the Youth and the National Tournament of Teams.  She also placed second in the Holy Cross Tournament of the North and third in both the National Games Tournament and the Games of Peace Tournament.

                              Coach Cyndi Lucente

                              Cyndi began fencing in 1993 at Virginia Tech.  She went on to serve as Captain of the women's team from 1995 to 1997, Chair of the Virginia Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association in 1997, and women's foil coach in 1998.   Cyndi has studied under many coaches, including Carl Przystawik, and is currently coached by Allen Evans of Dominion Fencing.  She has also attended coaching clinics by Michael Marx.  She and her husband Tom have been instrumental in making Richmond Fencing Club the success that it is today. Cyndi has been actively coaching at RFC since 2000 with a focus on competitive foil. 

                              Cyndi is a four-time Virginia Division Women’s Foil Champion (2005-2007, 2010) and a finalist in 2003-2004, and 2008.  Cyndi was the Southeast Section Women's Foil Champion in 2010.  She was the VA Division Women's Foil Points Champion from 2003 to 2011.  She has also had excellent results in regional premier events, being a two-time Kickoff Women’s Foil Champion in 2006, 2008, Hangover Classic finalist in 2007 and 2009, semi-finalist in 2010 and 2012 and a Charm City finalist in 2008.  She has had top 8 results in the mixed events as well.  She was also a member of the Women’s Epee and Foil Championship teams in 2006 and 2010, both a first for Richmond Fencing Club.   She is still an active competitor and consistently places in the top 8 of Virginia tournaments. 

                              Cyndi has earned a C11 in foil, a D10 in epee.  She is also a nationally rated referee in all three weapons. She served on VA Division board as a member-at-large from 2002 to 2005 and Treasurer from 2006 to 2008.  



                              Coach Chris Bush

                              Chris began fencing with the Richmond Fencing Club in 2006. Chris is responsible for starting the supervised youth fencing program, and assists with the instruction of beginner classes at RFC. She is currently coached by Cyndi Lucente and has earned a D09 rating in Foil.

                              Coach Dave Daley

                              Dave also began fencing with the Richmond Fencing Club. Dave teaches, or helps teach, several of our beginner classes, in addition to being the Club's unofficial Armorer. He is responsible for keeping much of the Club's equipment in working order.



                              Assistant Coach Helen Mays

                              Helen started fencing when she was twelve years old in Jackson, Mississippi. During her first few years as a fencer, she won several state championships and continued to be an active fencer when she moved to northern Virginia. Once there she fenced with Greg Kaidanov at Ronin Fencing Club for 3 years. where she competed in both local and national tournaments.  Helen has earned a C11 in epee.  In 2010 she moved to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where she studies psychology.

                              Assistant Coach Wayne Miller

                              Wayne started fencing with the Richmond Fencing Club in 2008.  He has trained under coaches  Scott O'Neal, Tom and Cyndi Lucente, Dee Hayes and Jeff Snider.  He finished 3rd at the 2008 Virginia Novice and 2010 May Mayhem tournaments and earned his E rating in 2009 at the Champions of Chivalry Veterans tournament.
