An 8-week (8+ hours) introduction to fencing for those who have never fenced
before, or are returning after an extended hiatus. This course is the first half
of the 16-week Beginner Foil Class offered by Richmond Fencing Club. Fencers in
Beginner Foil I develop fundamental footwork skills and the basic blade
actions of attack, riposte, and disengage, as well as basic refereeing skills. In the final class of each
session, students have the opportunity to fence with their
classmates and more experienced Club
Minimum age for the regular Beginner Foil I class is 8. The minimum age for the Youth Beginner Foil class is 6, and the minimum age for the evening Adult Beginner Foil I class is 14.
Cost for the Beginner Foil I Class is $100.00, and is non-refundable after the date of the first class. All equipment for the class is provided except a glove, which is available for purchase at the Club for $10.00 or online. Proper attire for the class consists of lightweight athletic clothing such as a t-shirt, sweat pants or warm-up pants (to cover the legs) and rubber soled athletic shoes (sneakers or tennis shoes). Please refrain from wearing boots, sandals, flip-flops, crocs or other loose or heavy shoes. Likewise, avoid bulky or hooded sweatshirts, jeans, khakis, skirts, dresses, etc.
Beginner Foil II Class:
Beginner Foil 2 is the second half of the 16-week Beginner Foil Class offered by Richmond Fencing Club. This class picks up where the Foil 1 class ends, and is intended to be a continuation of the previous eight weeks of instruction, though it is also an appropriate starting point for fencers with limited experience. This experience would include the ability to maneuver on the strip, execute a straight attack, a disengage attack, and a simple riposte. Fencers in Beginner Foil II learn and practice the execution of all essential fencing footwork, counter-riposte, basic compound ripostes, attacks with multiple change of line, and all traditional parries. Fencers improve the precision of their fencing skills.
Cost for the Beginner Foil II Class is $100.00, and is non-refundable after the date of the first class.
Equipment requirements are the same as our Foil I class.

Continuing Foil Instruction
Continuing Foil classes are for fencers (such as those advancing from the Beginner Foil I and II class) who have experience performing basic fencing skills, or for fencers with prior fencing experience. Cost for the Continuing Foil Class is $50.00 per month, and is non-refundable after the date of the first class.
Competitive Foil Instruction
Competitive Foil classes are for fencers (such as those advancing from Continuing Foil Instruction) who have at least several months' experience, who are comfortable with all essential fencing footwork, who can properly execute a compound attack, riposte, and counter-riposte, and who can perform all the traditional foil parries. Fencers in a Competitive Foil class refine their technique and practice skills from previous classes in realistic tactical situations, improve the fluidity, power and quickness of their footwork, and learn infighting, specific counterattack techniques, and tactical remise. Competitive Foil fencers are introduced to tournament competition, and they develop the skills necessary to referee a bout between fencers of their level.
Cost for the Competitive Foil Class is $50.00 per month, and is non-refundable after the date of the first class.
Beginner Epée I
Beginner Epée I is an 8-week introduction to Epée fencing for fencers who have at least completed Beginner Foil I and II (or the equivalent).

Continuing Epée Instruction
The Continuing Epée class is for fencers who have some prior Epée experience (having at least completed the Beginner Epée I class, or the equivalent), and are comfortable with essential footwork, simple attacks, counter-attacks, basic parry/riposte and remise. Students should be practicing on a regular basis and seeking to improve the skills necessary for competition in tournaments.
Cost for the Epée Class $50.00 per month, and is non-refundable after the date of the first class.
Sabre Instruction
The Sabre class is for fencers who have at least several months' experience, are comfortable with all essential fencing footwork, can properly execute a compound attack, riposte, and counter-riposte, can perform all the traditional foil parries, but want to specialize in Sabre.

Supervised Youth Fencing
The Supervised Youth Fencing is an opportunity for our younger fencers (age 14-under) to practice bouting with one another using the electronic scoring equipment. Instructors and parents referee bouts between the kids, and everyone gets a chance to fence with one another. This is not a formal class, but rather a coordinated practice time that is only available to Club members.
Supervised Youth Fencing is a Club Member benefit, and is included in your dues ($40.00 per month).
